Memories of Harry Argentino (Sailor Rest Your Oars!)
Harry went aboard the Bergall as a plank owner on June 12, 1944 as an EM3 and rode her for all 5 war patrols and stayed with her as she retired from the war and returned to Portsmouth Navy Yard for repairs and was still on her roster, as an EM2 in October of 1945.
Here's my dad with his hand on fellow shipmate, SC3 Nick Glenn at the commissioning party. All during my youth I heard my dad talk
of the long, dangerous missions in the Bergall, yet it seemed to travel through
the adolescent hole in my head. It actually was not until well after
his death that I finally realized the sacrifices made and the courage he and his
shipmates possessed during those long voyages of WWII and Korea. I
am ashamed it took me so long to wake up, but I'm sure he understands as he
watches over me and my family, living in a very comfortable world made possible
only by the extraordinary efforts of our war time military forces.
I've traveled all over the world for 20 years in a job achieved as a result of
his continued sacrifice for my education. My life has been one of
uncanny health, inexplicable abilities, and unexpected success thanks to my mom
and dad's guidance. Harry would have been very proud of the daughter
I was blessed with-herself a Nurse of her own choosing, and my wife - whom he
had known far too shortly until his death in the early 90's.
I thank all of you who served aboard the USS Bergall, having made America what
it is today. My dad was always very proud of his service to his
country. As an author, I dedicated my first work to his
name. I only wish he had lived long enough for me to have been able
to tell him these things.
God bless,
Bob Argentino
