Subject: U.S.S. BERGALL - Report of SECOND War Patrol

  The following points seem to bear out the theory that the escort was also damaged:
   
  1. The escort did not open fire on us until twenty minutes after the target was seen to be hit, although the range to the escort had been 5,000 yards and was 9,300 when she finally did open fire.
   
  0.2. No effort was made by the escort to chase us.
   
  3. Both target and escort stopped shortly after the target was seen to be hit.
   
  4. Only two shots per salvo were fired and only three salvos. This does not indicate a well ordered attack from a cruiser but rather a last gasp attempt by a one or two turrets firing independantly.
   
  Hits on the escort would not have been seen by bridge personnel because of the huge flames which enveloped the target, two thousand yards closer to us and nearly in the same lign of sight.
  The idea that the escort was also a very valuable target caused me to turn to close range slowly toward the target and plot the escort with the intention of attacking him if opportunity afforded. Throughout this period the speed of the escort was zero. This hope was soon dropped for at--
