At radar depth. |
0400 | Ordered 200 feet, range 3,000 yards, speed 8 knots, angle on the bow nearly zero. |
0407-27 | With range about 600 yards on TDC fired one MK.27 |
0408-47 | Heard one explosion. |
0427 | Surfaced. |
0430 | Sighted PC boat at range of 4,000 yards but could not see him in gun sights. Closed range to 2,800 yards. Still could not see PC in gun sights. Decided to stay our of his range of visibility until light enough to see him in gun sights. |
0518 | Target disappeared from radar screen at 3,400 yards. Headed for last known position of target. |
0520 | Sighted wreckage in water. Sighted life boat apparently empty. Fired one pan of 20 mm. to sink life boat. Several men appeared from bottom of boat and jumped over the side. |
0550 | Picked up two survivors. Stripped them topside and made them prisoners. |
0600 | Submerged heading for life guard station. |
1330 | Still bucking 3 knot current so reversed course for northern approaches. |
1820 | Surfaced. |
2030 | Reversed course to make south bound transit and reach life guard station. |
28 Jan. 1945 | |
0135 | Sighted three boats in formation, probably PC's, beyond radar range (about 12,000 yards) bearing 310šT, just visible in path of brilliant full moon. (Ship contact #2, 3 and 4). Decided to forego the risk of taking three at once. Continued toward life guard station. |
