Memories of Jack Peach '46 - '49
When I came across this site, I had forgotten that I was EVER a baker in the Navy.
I came aboard the Bergall on the day before Thanksgiving 1946 and was stayed aboard till the 23rd of Dec. 49.
They loaded ammo the day after Thanksgiving (my second day!) and I though that it was very exciting so I was watching the ammo go down the hatch and puffing on my cigarette when the captain came aboard. That was the first and last time I was on report in 21 years! I was told at mass that if I kept my nose clean for three months it would come out of my record and it did. I had no idea what that red flag meant. Now I know... "No spark or flame... explosive hazard"!
On January 22, 1948, the Bergall
made her 1,000th dive. I recently found this old letter in my dad's
old papers. I don't remember sending it but dad must have liked it.
Arlie (Smokey) Brood and I went up to Medford, Or. on a long weekend from Mare Island ,when we were in overhaul, and I met his family . He was a twin and I remember his sister was crippled with polio. I didn't know he was from SD originally. I left ND for 40 years and then came back and live here 6 months of the year. Florida gets me for the colder months.
After I got off the Bergall I changed my rate to ET. I was on 8 boats in my navy career, but the Bergall was first and best.
Here's my lovely wife, Betty, myself and our dog, Cam.
I was recently inducted into the Holland Club and proud of the acceptance!
