The USS Bergall Association Scholarship Program
(two boats, one crew)

USS BERGALL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED - May 2016

USS Bergall Shipmates and Family (SS-320 & SSN-667),

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the award of our first $500.00 scholarship in 2016 to Ms. Cassandra Helmer, resident of Allentown, PA and granddaughter of Shipmate Dave Padora TM2 (SS) 70-73, to attend the University of Pittsburgh this Fall.  Cassie has an outstanding academic record in high school while still finding time for sports (competition dance), clubs and volunteering in her school and community.  She plans on majoring in biochemistry in college with a goal of becoming a surgeon after medical school.  We congratulate Cassie for her many achievements and are pleased to support her pursuit of a college education.  We are sure her grandfather is very proud of her and pleased to see her receive our "first" scholarship award for higher education.

Now that the program has begun, the Scholarship Committee hopes the legacy of this award will continue on for many years to come.  We hope you will continue to support this fine effort and help spread the word about the program with fellow shipmates that may have children, grand-children, etc. who may be interested and qualify for the program in the future.

Ms. Helmer:

Congratulations!  You are the winner of the 2016 USS Bergall Association Scholarship for 2016.  I called and left a message on your cell phone just a few minutes ago.  A check in the amount of $500.00 along with the award letter will be mailed to you tomorrow.

On behalf of the Bergall Association membership, I wish you the best as you begin your college studies at the University of Pittsburgh.  I am sure your grandfather Dave Padora is very proud of your accomplishments during high school and especially to see his granddaughter receive our Association's "first" scholarship award for higher education.

Our only request is that you provide a personal photograph to post on the Bergall Association website and an unofficial transcript of your completed Fall 2016 semester.  Please forward these items to Jerome Whitehead, our Association Secretary:

Dear Mr. Sobkowski,

Thank you so much for awarding me the 2016 USS Bergall Association Scholarship.  I am honored to be the recipient of the organization's first scholarship.  I am very excited to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall and this scholarship with help with my expenses.  Attached is an electronic file of a photo of me.  It might be easier to use this for uploading.  I will mail in a hard copy to the address you gave me as well.  Also, please confirm you will need a copy of my transcript from my first semester at Pitt, rather than one from my high school.  Thank you again for the award and thank you for your service to our great Country.

Sincerely,
Cassandra Helmer
