USS Bergall Shipmates and Family (SS-320 & SSN-667)

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the award of our $1,000.00 scholarship for 2020 to Mr. Nicholas John McConnell, resident of Baltimore, Maryland and the grandson of Sam McConnell who served on the USS Bergall from 1970-75.  Nicholas had an outstanding academic record in high school and was very involved in school clubs, athletics, and volunteering in his community.. He will begin his college studies this fall at the University of Maryland and plans on majoring in Psychology with a goal of becoming a Psychologist.  We congratulate Nicholas for his many achievements and are pleased to support his pursuit of a college education.  We are sure his parents and grandparents are very proud of him and pleased to see him pursue his dream.

Dear Mr. McConnell:

Congratulations! The USS Bergall Association Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that you are the winner of the 2020 USS Bergall Association Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00.

The money is awarded to assist you in meeting the cost of your education during the 2020/2021 school year.  You may use it for tuition, books, transportation, equipment or supplies as you see fit.

The Association encourages you to pursue your goals in life with the same perseverance and commitment exhibited by your grandfather (Sam McConnell) in serving his country and the USS Bergall. I would also highly encourage you to reapply next year.

On behalf of the Bergall Association membership, I wish you “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and plenty of encouragement as you pursue your education.

With Best Wishes,
Michael J. Sobkowski
Chairman – Scholarship Committee

“I would like to thank the Bergall Association for awarding me not only this scholarship but the  opportunity to continue my education with more assistance. This means a lot to me and I truly appreciate it. This fall, I will be attending the University of Maryland in College Park where I will major in Psychology. During my studies, I will remember the help I have received to allow me to even be where I am. Thank you.”

Nicholas J. McConnell
