Just a TM ?!
Memories of Chuck Coker
It's great to read about many
of the memories the crew had during their tenure on Bergall. I
shared a lot of them and may be able to add a few more. I also have
some pictures that I can share that may bring back a few memories.
I'm going to try my best to be at the 2001 reunion, the last one looked like a
lot of fun.
I was a TM2. I acquired the DV rating shortly after being assigned
to the boat. It kinda helped me get established on the boat because
three prior crew members failed the training and the boat needed divers to go to
sea. Unfortunately that also meant that I was on almost all the
trips. I got a chuckle out of your comment regarding TMs
shouldn't be playing with dangerous objects. There were a lot
of dangerous things that I did but I'd have to kill you if I told you...
Fortunately we had a very
empowering weapons officer that pretty much let us knuckle draggers do what we
wanted. We didn't need any stink'n A gangers or wire bitters repairing our
stuff. And if we did, they were all my friends
anyway. I never ran into the typical class distinction that
TMs normally experience until I got off the boat and out of the
Navy. Don't get the wrong impression, it doesn't bother me,
it's fun to watch the double-take when I tell an ex-submariner that I was a
torpeckerman; its especially fun when they have to work for me.
Glad to join the club.
Chuck Coker
