Memories of Pat Davis
The Grand Tour!
Just before the Boat went to Mare Island in late 1985, someone thought that the Bergall would be a great boat to show off to all of the "Middies" and their parents. So as par normal, off she goes...and anchors about a mile from Annapolis. We were assigned to give tours of the boat and it's spaces and I was given the job of tour guide in SONAR.
Well it went sort of like this...
"Welcome to the sonar shack, I'm Pat Davis and this is the AN/BQQ-5, any
questions?"
Unfortunately most people did have questions, and I usually had
some form of an answer. The best question was, "What is a Bergall?" Being
the good Sonarman that I was, I quipped, "A little shit eating fish that
lives off of the coast of New Jersey!" I think I would have gotten away
with that answer if ADM Larson (Commandant of the academy then), hadn't
started giggling behind me.
