A Local’s Guide to Nashville’s Neighborhoods • Downtown – center of it all. Broadway Ave and 2nd Street are lined with honky-tonks, live music and excitement. The most famous are Legends Corner and Tootsies (it’s worth a trip to the top of Tootsies, inside gets a little too crammed), but the local favorite is Robert’s Western World. Check it out 6:30 – 9:30 Thursday – Saturday for the best house band in town. Local tip: don’t wait in line in the front of the bars on the “left side” of Broadway (the side where the aforementioned bars are). Go around the corner at Legends and up to the alley between the bars and the Ryman Auditorium – you will find back entrances to each bar and there is never a line. Fun fact: that gate you see behind the Ryman is where performers like Dolly Parton would exit between sets and sit down and have a drink at Legends or Tootsies with the locals before returning to finish a show. • Must Do (you must go downtown): Visit Legends, Tootsies, and Robert’s. Wander around and let music pull you in to other spots. Have a bushwhacker (think a Wendy’s chocolate shake with alcohol) at Broadway Brewhouse. Eat at Martin’s BBQ (it’s the best in town). Tour the Ryman (the former Grand Old Opry). Visit any of the museums like the Country Music Hall of Fame or the George Jones Museum. And if you want upscale Southern Food, Husk’s chef has won best Chef Southeast. • Germantown – just a mile north of the city is Germantown. This area is known for it’s restaurants and is one of the hottest areas in the city. Between downtown and Germantown is Bi-Centennial park – go for a stroll or check out the Farmers Market. • Must do (if you end up here): Eat at Rolf & Daughters, City House, or Butchertown. Reservations are needed for the first two, the last is walk in only. • East Nashville – a couple miles from downtown over the river is East Nashville. Think of this as “hipster-ville” – a lot of divey but good bars and some excellent restaurants (especially in the center called 5 points). • Must Do (if you end up here): if you end up here, check out no. 308 for some interesting drinks and décor. Afterwards walk around 5 points (you can grab a bushwhacker at 3 Crow Bar). If you like spicy foods, eating Nashville Hot Chicken is a tradition. One of the best in the city, Pepperfire, is on the East Side. The original, Princes, is not too far past that but you could end up waiting and it’s not in the nicest of areas. The other and most popular is Hattie B’s, which is in Midtown but usually has an hour wait. • The Gulch – less than a mile from downtown to the west, this little district has some great restaurants and hotel bars. • Must Do (if you end up here): Station Inn has the best bluegrass bands in the country, the Thompson hotel has the best rooftop bar and view of the city, Arnold’s has the best meat and 3 in the city (despite all of the Chicago and NY upscale spots that have opened up, this is still regarded as the “best” restaurant in the city), and there are a series of breweries right up the street (I recommend doing a tour at Yazoo, one of the original of now 23 – ask if Neil McCormick is there and he’ll be happy to answer any questions). • West End – a couple miles west of downtown sits Vanderbilt University, and around it are various restaurants and businesses. You could tour the university or go for a stroll through Centennial Park and visit the Parthenon, the only exact replica of the Parthenon from ancient Greece. • Midtown/Demonbreun street – between Vanderbilt and the Gulch sits two “neighborhoods” that blend together. A lot to eat and drink here. • Must Do (you should see what makes Nashville famous): Drive up 16th and 17th avenues – these are known as “Music Row” and is where a lot of the Nashville music is produced. Hattie B’s Hot Chicken is here too, but expect a wait. If you like cocktails, have a drink at the Patterson House (no reservations, leave your name and wonder around). And if fine dining is your thing, grab a reservation at The Catbird Seat. • Note: Hillsboro village is at one corner of Vanderbilt and is a few blocks long. Nice quick eat spots, shopping, and the Belcourt Theater is a locally supported theater that plays indie movies. • 12th South – like Germantown, this is one of the hottest areas in Nashville. Restaurants line the street for about 5 blocks. Favorites are Josephine, Mafiozas, 12th South Tap Room, and Urban Grub. • Must Do (if you end up here): Get a scoop or 3 from Jeni’s ice cream. Originally from Ohio, this is the best ice cream out there, bar none. • Other • See a live show – it’s Music City, after all! If you want more than what you get on Broadway, the following places are great spots to watch a live show. Ascend Amphitheater, The Basement, The Basement East, The End, Exit/In, the Ryman, Third Man Records. Check the website for each and see if anything sounds appealing! • Have one of the best breakfasts in America: Loveless Café. It is 25 mins west of the city and is typically a 1 to 1.5 hour wait, but it is worth it. The biscuits and preserves are the best in the world (they beat Bobby Flay in a throwdown episode and have been featured everywhere), and although ABC called it one of the best breakfasts in America, the country fare spot also serves lunch and dinner. Everything is delicious. |
