Memories of
James Riley
How to Strengthen the "Grinch".
I rode the ole girl
as a spook (CTI1) from 11/80 to 1/81. Bennie Henderson and I were
always concerned about the health and fitness of our fellow crew. We
noticed the Grinch was getting a little paunchy around the middle so we embarked
on a clandestine mission to enhance his aggregate level of fitness,
specifically, his upper body strength.
Our plan worked, well maybe too well. See, we slipped a TDU weight
in the Grinch's bunkpan every couple of days; naturally to help him gain muscle.
Over the course of the run, I'd say we stuck about 8-10 weights in there, maybe
more. With about two or three days to go until termination of the
mission, we took them all out. Want to guess how fast the bunkpan
lid got lifted when we did that? Sonar heard the thump through the
hull and I think the Grinch broke all the fingers on his hand.
Tom had a great sense of humor about it and we thank him for that... by the way
it was all Henderson's idea
