(N) SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS -

Sound conditions and the results obtained were
in general, good, and at times excellent.

In the early stages of the patrol, conducted in
comparatively shallow water (40 fathoms) off the Indo-Chine
Coast - Cape Varella to Cape Padaran, fine results were ob-
tained on our JP Sonic listening gear in spite of a great deal
of water noise from the beach, 5,000 to 6,000 distance.
Initial contacts were made on light screws of small spit kits
at range of 6,000 to 8,000 yards consistantly on the JP gear,
and when a large target finally appeared the operators thought
we had a battleship.

The JK and QB Supersonic listening gear also
gave fine performance picking up long range, low frequency
(14.7 kc's) pinging at ranges of 10,000 to 20,000 yards.
Until damaged to an undetermined degree on collision with the
bottom, the JK was giving exceptionally fine results.

Sound conditions in the Gulf of Siam,
Lat: 7°13'N., Long: 109°27' E., were extremely good.   Super-
sonic gear detected pinging at ranges of close to 20,000
yards.

The western approaches to Balabao with its
isothermal layer down to 200 feet also lent itself to fine
listening conditions.   Long range pinging was detected at
approximately 30,000 yards on the QB and the JP detected
screws at ranges of around 15,000 yards.

Throughout the patrol there were no opper-
tunities for ping ranges.

No defects were noticed in any of the existing
equipment.
