(O) DENSITY LAYERS =

  1.   26-28 Oct. 1944:   Westward approach to
Balabao - no appreciable temperature gradient in evidence
down to  200 feet.   No appreciable afternoon effect.

  2.   22 Oct. 1944:   Entrance Gulf Siam
(60°45'S., 105°16' E.).   No temperature gradient or afternoon
effect noticed.

  3.   28 Sept. -- 16 Oct.:   Off Annam Coast (Cape
Varella to Cape Padaran) two to eight miles distance from the
beach.   General conditions discovered were as follows:

        (a)   No appreciable afternoon effect.

        (b)   Isothermal layer (less than 1° negative
gradient per 100 feet) down to between 80 and 160
feet.

        (c)   Immediately under (b) a steep negative
gradient of from 3° to 10° and of a thickness
between 25 to 45 feet.

        (d)   From beneath (c) to 400 feet a gradient
negative gradient of from 3° to 8° per 100 feet.

        (e)   Greatest ballast differential (peri-
scope depth to 400 feet) was 12,000 pounds.

        (f)   See drawing on following page for
sample bathythermograph card of the "evasive
dive".   This shows the typical conditions
excepting that the pronounced gradient is usually
more pronounced and the gradient from beneath the
pronounced gradient to 400 feet is steeper
(5° to 8° / 100 feet.) at distances 6 to 10 miles
from beach.   Evasive dive was made 4,500 yards
from beach.
