Memories of John McCarthy, '47-'49
The fellow on the left is "Chips" McFarland, the one on the right
is "Duke" Dodson.
Australia, '48
Here's blowups of the picture, left to right:
I am the third from the left...
Our CO, LtCdr.. Steve Johnson on the bridge coming into Brisbane.
CSM Keith Hanson is second from the left.
Entering Brisbane, Australia.
These shots are from 47-49...
EM2 J.P. (Chips) Mc Farland and QM2 Floyd Jones
MoMM2 Tom Atienza and EM3 Bill Burnham
Sub Base, Pearl Harbor, SS 402, USS Sea Fox and SS 334, USS
Cabezon
Subs from the Bikini Atomic Tests; Mare Island, Ca.
(webmaster's notes: The most inboard boat has got to be USS Skate,
who had almost all her superstructure blown away and her periscope shears blown
to starboard like you see here.
Research looks like we see the
USS Skate, USS Skipjack, USS Searaven and USS Tuna.
Some of the
early boats did get more extensive modifications than others. This may account
for the Balao Style shears on the 2nd boat.
What also is never reported, the boats were pink... pink from the action of
surviving the blast and it's heat !
Sub Base, Pearl Harbor, SS 330, USS Brill; SS 331, USS Bugara; SS
333, USS Bumper.
Pearl Harbor, looking from the Sub Base; the tower in the middle
is on Ford Island.
And if you want to see a handful from my scrapbook...
