(A) PROLOGUE - | |
Commissioned 12 June 1944. During month of operations in New London Area performed contract torpedo trials and fired four exercise torpedoes. Departed New London 15 July 1944. Enroute Panama received indoctrinational life guard training from one Army training plane which splashed 1,400 yards abeam when we were about 100 miles North of Mona Passage. They were unhurt and enjoyed the ride to Panama. Arrived Pearl Harbor 13 August 1944. Engaged in two week training period, firing nine torpedoes and taking part in one convoy exercise. Entered dry dock to replace composition stern tube and strut bearing with wood thereby eliminating loud bearing squeals. Radar Officer reported for duty. Ready for sea 8 September 1944. | |

1330 VW | Departed Pearl Harbor for Saipan in accordance with ComTaskFor 17 Operation orders 302-44, conducting daily dives and drills. |

1052 (X) | Picked up float made up of seven Kapok life jackets wrapped in a hammock stenciled "Lemos, R.L.". In pocket of one life jacket was a sheet of mimeographed press news entitled "The Abbot Dabbler", dated 29 January 1944. Barnacles indicated several months marine growth. Lat. - 20° 28' N. Long. - 173° 56' W. |

1210 (K) | Moored alongside USS Holland in Tanapag Harbor, Saipan. Commenced topping off with fuel and water. |
