1654 (I) Picked up small boat by high periscope.  Closed.   Found five Jap soldier in uniform, unarmed in boat, apparently escaped from Saipan or Guam.   Could see no radio or equipment though boat was alongside bumping us and we could see inside from the bridge.   Japs made gestures which indicated they wanted us to leave them alone and that we were the scum of the earth.   Decided against giving them food and continued on our way.
Lat. - 16° 41' N.   Long. - 138° 33' E.

1545 (I) Sighted submarine (SHIP CONTACT #1) by high periscope about eight miles, bearing 323°T.   His position:  Lat. - 18° 50' N.   Long. - 133° 45' E.   His course about 110°T.   He dove as soon as we had his true bearing.   We went around him with the intention of going back to look after dark.   Sent contact report.   His silhouette looked unlike our boat in that there was no periscope support visible.   However, at that range, it might not have been seen.   Conning tower was large and flat.   The forward part of the main deck could just be seen when he was on top of a swell.   Nothing seen from the bridge.
1930 (I) Received message from ComSubPac indicating that contact was probably one of our boats since two of them were due to pass us shortly.
2215 (I) SJ Radar interference from another SJ.

0115 (I) SJ Radar interference from another SJ.
0830 (I) It dawned on me that the two radar contacts were too far apart to be the same friendly submarine and that the one sighted probably was enemy.
