Subject: | U.S.S. BERGALL -- Report of FIRST War Patrol |
------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
1903 (H) | Surfaced in rain squalls and commenced patrolling a line 160° - 340° T. passing Cape Varella 15,000 yards abeam. Past performance of our SJ indicated this would cover all ships of fair size passing within 15 miles of Cape Varella. |
2300 (H) | Picked up fairly strong radar signals on 130 mgs. Signal not strong enough to indicate that we were picked up (See Para M). Believed this to be shore based or plane but later doubted this too. Bearings too indefinite to warrant search. |
Sept. 30, 1944 | Conducted surface and submerged patrol as yesterday. |
Oct. 1, 1944 | Submerged off Varella, patrolling as before. |
1225 (H) | Sighted small coastal AK (70-100 tons) (SHIP CONTACT #3). Believed more to be gained by waiting for larger ship than by trying to hit a small shallow draft vessel with MK. 23 torpedoes. Not able to get in for a stern shot with MK. 18's. |
Oct. 2, 1944 | Submerged off Varella, patrolling as before. |
1300 (H) | Sighted two self propelled barges heading south close to coast. (SHIP CONTACT #4). |
1330 (H) | Sighted small AK running north close to coast (SHIP CONTACT #5). Beginning to weaken now. Watching these spit kits go by is annoying but this one doesn't look large enough to warrent torpedo expenditure. |
Oct. 3, 1944 | Submerged off Varella as before. |
0925 (H) | Sighted very small AK going north along coast (SHIP CONTACT #6). Let him go by. |
