1040 (I) | While endeavoring to send message to ComSubPac stating our belief that an enemy submarine was on the road from Formosa to Saipan, Frances came along and forced us down. (PLANE CONTACT #1). Secured SD. |
1250 (I) | Very shortly after clearing our message Frances returned, forced us down and dropped one wild depth charge. Secured transmitter. (PLANE CONTACT #2) |
Sept. 25, 1944 | |
0847 (I) | Frances forced us down. |
1031 (I) | Pete did the same dropping two depth charges. |
1218 (I) | Frances did it again but without fireworks. |
1522 (I) | Pete repeated without dropping. |
(PLANE CONTACTS #3, 4, 5 and 6). | |
Sept. 29, 1944 | |
0700 (H) | Submerged for fist all day dive off Cape Varella, having decided that the strip of water two to three miles off beach between Perforated Rock and Varella Light was about ideal for picking up ships running close to the shore. |
1230 (H) | Sighted small ship (SHIP CONTACT #2) with very large silver colored pigsticks on each mast. Started approach but discontinued because of his extremely small size (60 tons). Felt it unwise to disclose our presence by firing at a target of so little value our first day in, what I believed to be, an area of fairly sized targets. |
1449 (H) | Sighted Frances type plane flying directly overhead but did not drop (PLANE CONTACT #7). |
