CONFIDENTIAL
Subject: U.S.S. BERGALL -- Report of FIRST War Patrol
------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oct. 8, 1944 Patrolling off Phanrang Bay submerged by day.
1219 (H) Sighted small AK, commenced approach.   Reached minimum range of 4,000 yards.   Target too small to fire torpedoes at this range (SHIP CONTACT #8).
Oct. 9, 1944 Patrolling submerged off coast just north of Phanrang Bay.
0548 (H) Sound picked up fast screws bearing 300°T.   Went to Normal Approach Course.   Unable to see target because of darkness along coast.   Bearing drew ahead.
0628 (H) While trying to see what sound had heard picked up small AK bearing 230°T.   Then saw that sound had heard another self propelled barge (SHIP CONTACT #9) but the newly contacted AK almost looked like a ship (SHIP CONTACT #10).   Commenced approach.   His size was still doubtful so ran across his track at about 2,000 yards to eliminate range errors.
0716 (H) Fired three MK. 18 torpedoes at 1,000 yards. (TORPEDO ATTACH #1).   The first one hit and completely demolished him.   Best estimate of size about 700 tons.
1242 (H) Sighted plane. (PLANE CONTACT #11).
Decided to try another day or two out in the big ship lanes in hopes of getting something worth while.
Oct. 10, 11, 1944 Patrolling shipping lanes 90 to 120 miles off coast on surface day and night.   No contacts.
