Subject: | U.S.S. BERGALL -- Report of FIRST War Patrol |
------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
Oct. 12, 1944 | Patrolling submerged 1-1/2 mile off coast between Hannai Pt. and Point de Camranh. |
0907 (H) | Heard echo ranging. |
0915 (H) | Sighted new looking PC boat with small angle on bow. Evaded. (SHIP CONTACT #11). We proceeded south along coast. |
1712 (H) | Sighted the same or similar PC boat going north along coast (SHIP CONTACT #12). Evaded. |
Oct. 13, 1944 | Patrolling same track as yesterday |
0816 (H) | Sighted two ships bearing 343°T., range 12,000 yards. These are the first worth while targets we have seen (SHIP CONTACT #13). Commenced approach. |
0833 (H) | Sighted two escorts, one a new PC, probably the same one seen yesterday, the other an old PC. |
The set up now looked like this: -- First ship an AO of about 2,000 tons on course south; Second ship, a new AK of about 4,000 tons about 1,000 yards astern of the first and obviously the most important target. First escort bore about 300°, distance 1,500 yards relative to first ship. Second escort bore 250°, distancce about 1,500 yards to second ship. Course of formation 180°T. with the beach 3,500 yards on their starboard hand. Decided against firing from a position between targets and beach for following reason: --- | |
(a) Both ships would not be effectively fired at from stern tubes only and the necessary run of MK.23 torpedoes using the bow tubes would force us dangerously close to the beach. | |
