0847 |
Dove for plane. (Aircraft Contact #11). |
0958 | Surfaced. |
1232 | Sighted bomber about 15 miles. He did not head towards so remained on surface. (Aircraft Contact #12). |
1247 | Lost sight of bomber. Details not visible because of long range, but probably "Betty". |
7 Feb. 1945 | |
0330 | FLOUNDER asked us where we were going. Told him we planned
to spend day submerged one mile off Honnai Pt.
NOTE:- Had decided on this not only because past experience showed this to be a good spot but because BLUEBACK, who was the only boat assigned this area, was on life guard duty two hundred miles away and we cannot make our own area today anyway. FLOUNDER's presence in Charlie Three was a surprise. |
0340 | FLOUNDER told us that HAKE was guarding Van Fong Bay with two tankers therein and that FLOUNDER would patrol off Hon Lon. |
0615 | Submerged. |
0845 | Sighted masts of two ships (Ship Contact #8) and heard much pinging. Commenced approach. The sea is glassy smooth with very long low swells. No planes in sight, yet. Apparently ships are going to seaward of me. |
0905 | Can make out four escorts, two on port flank of the two tankers, one ahead and one on his starboard flank - our obstacle. Both targets look like large fleet tankers but in this glassy sea I refuse to worry about identification. They are zigging radically. |
0930 | Range 4,400 yards, angle on bow 70šS., near escort very close. Decided not to fire across his bow because torpedo wakes would be seen too soon and avoided. Also, these escorts look like DE's and we don't have much water for evasion. |
