After the paddle boat ride a few of us decided to visit the USS Razorback.
The Mary Marrs was the support vessel.
The welcoming plaque.
And it was open to the Sub Vets.
Another gangway to fun...
Sid and Katy had actually gone the day before.
They went in the bow and we went in the stern so I combined the shots.
Abe and Dick are WAY ahead of Carol, Patti and I.
Here's a shot of the tall "northern sail. A welcome blessing to
those sailors who
weathered the north Atlantic weather.
Dick and Abe are about to go down the aft hatch.
But there's always time for a mug shot.
Sid and Katy looked into the sail with the shears and upper observation area.
Sid wasn't ABOUT to climb up there but Katy was more than happy to get a shot
looking down.
Looking to the stern over the assorted equipment heads on the sail top.
Here's the Target Bearing Indicator whose azimuth would be repeated below for
target angles and navigation purposes.
Just below the top are these WONDERFUL windows where the lookouts could take a
break
from the exposure of the treacherous North Sea winds and spray... and a few
waves!
Looking down into the control... go ahead Katy... drop down.
At the stern, looking forward, her rear torpedo loading skids are mounted and
ready.
Dropping into the stern hatch finds us facing aft into the four rear torpedo
tubes.
Mike and Carol take a moment to take it all in. Carol had gone
through the day before
but she was a dream to come along with Patti and Mike.
Here's a picture of her earlier years with a sailor snug in his bunk above the
torpedoes.
I don't think these are "stock" seats but a fine place to set firing solutions
for the aft torpedoes.
Looks like maneuvering has some "Westinghouse sticks" for propulsion and
charging.
A nice array of controls... still shiny and ready.
The Bergall (SS 320) had GE "paddles".
Above the "sticks" are the gauges to monitor.
More gauges and the Telegraph.
Jump in guys, tell me what all these are for.
And MORE gauges... boy, there's a lot of info to digest!
Just "Start, Stop and Run" to make these Fairbanks Morse engines go...
Heck, that looks easy.
With a valve with no coupling... we may not be using THIS head today.
Here's one of three shots of a sample storage locker under the bunks.
Looks like room for "work clothes" and toiletries.
Everything but the kitchen sink?
Dress Blues and a refresher on knots.
He's "suppose" to be sleeping but what's with the hand?
Have you checked the board for duty roster, liberty or the COB's latest bitch?
Ah... the galley... now what cook would need more to feed 120 men?
This must be for the officers, who else rates a double sink?
And this was just a PART of the boat...
