| Subject: | U.S.S. BERGALL (SS320) - Report of First War Patrol - Comment on. |
| 1. | BERGALL's First War Patrol was conducted in the SOUTH CHINA SEA off INDO-CHINA coast in the general vicinity of CAPE VARELLA. |
| 2. | While patrolling close to the caost BERGALL encountered the usual heavy streams of small ship traffic and came to the conclusion that the important traffic would be found further off shore. After patrolling well off shore for four days BERGALL returned to the coast in the vicinity of PHANRANG BAY and demolished a small AK with one hit from three torpedoes. After another un- productive period off shore, the Commanding Officer returned to the coast again and was rewarded by the opportunity to sink a medium AK north of CAMRANH BAY. |
| 3. | The third attack was made while performing offensive reconnaissance of BALABAO STRAIT. One of the two large tank_ ers, escorted by two destroyers, was sunk in the night surface attack. Four hits were made in spite of the long range. |
| 4. | The award of the Submarine Combat Insignia is author- ized for this patrol. |
