them in a moderate sea. The chief difficulty that could not be overcome was the impossibility of making a good weld or even a passable braze with our oxy-acetolyne outfit. The heat was carried away too rapidly by the hull.
Due to the complete damage to sections of cable and the presence of salt water, no attempt was made to repair electrical casualties. Fire control and emergency lighting circuits were operative; all others were out
To permit rapid pumping of compartment the trim line was put on the W.R.T tank and the top of this tank removed and a screen placed over it. All articles such as bed clothing, paper and personnel gear were removed from the compartment to preclude clogging of trim and drain cconnections. All sound gear was removed as possible.
For purposes of security, the SD transmitter and the entire IFF gear were destroyed by breaking in small pieces and throwing over the side. Radar spares were transferred to the ANGLER. Demolition charges were installed by warheads forward and mines aft and alongside SJ gear in conning tower. Wiring was made up and circuits tested but detonators were not to be installed until the ready moment.
We were very sorry we did not have a better supply of stock and plating, more wedges, and above all an efficient welding outfit.
