2. TORPEDO DEFECTS | |
On 11 December while routining torpedoes, it was discovered that the torpedoes in tubes 5 and 6 had lost nearly 1,000 pounds of air in the space of a few days. After checking every possible source of leakage, it was found that both torpedoes had developed identical leaks in the elbow of the blow line to the exercise head, just as it emerges from the forward bulkhead of the airflask. Both torpedoes were Mark 23. Torpedo #63292, in tube 6 was pulled out, and the warhead removed to inspect the leak. Torpedo #63203 in tube #5 was recharged and left in the tube until work could be completed on the other torpedo. Unfortunately it was necessary to fire this torpedo on the night of December 13th. The air pressure had been kept up to about 2,500 lbs. |
