(K) | MAJOR DEFECTS AND DAMAGE - Continued - |
4. SD Radar Defects:
(a) In attempting to raise plate voltage to normal in turning gear on, plate current became excessive. Visual inspection showed that one 8014A was not lit. Trouble found in filament connectors which got very hot and burned insulating material in corona shield. Remedied by cleaning connectors and renewing insulating paper. 5. Sound Gear Defects: (a) JP phones gave continual trouble. Present phones have very low sensitivity. (b) 2/7/45 - Fathometer was started; no output. Visual inspection showed taht there was no driver plate voltage. Plate transformer relay was not making contact. Contact was repaired. (c) 2/7/45 - JP operation intermittant. Found break in cable from head to receiver. Repaired break. Unable to replace packing nut. |

(L) | RADIO - |
All radio equipment functioned very satisfactorily
throughout the patrol. Submarine schedules were received
without difficulty except for a few instances while on station.
Of four attempted transmissions, three were handled expeditiously and efficiently in spite of considerable enemy jamming and interference. In the early morning hours of 6 February 1945, effort to obtain clearance for a transmission met with no success whatsoever. We tried to obtain an answer over three recommended frequencies (i.e. 8470, 12705 and 16940KCS) and finally sent twice blind over each. Two hours of patient waiting for our message to come back over the Fox schedule proved our efforts fruitless. With daylight upon us we were forced to secure. More than average enemy countermeasures and poor atmospheric conditions may be attributed to this difficulty. Two days of intensive CW Wolfpac Communications on SAF plan (A) frequencies were quite successful. |
