Subject: | U.S.S. BERGALL -- Report of FIRST War Patrol |
------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
1500 (H) | Weak APR contact. Swung ship but unable to obtain bearing due to fading. |
1640 (H) | Commenced return to patrol line. Lost APR contact completely. |
Oct. 20, 1944 | Patrolling assigned line again. |
2200 (H) | Left patrol station heading for area south of Saigon. |
Oct. 21, 1944 | Enroute area south of Saigon. |
0645 (H) | APR contact of medium strength 140 mgs. Believed to be a plane too far away to detect us. |
Oct. 22, 1944 | Enroute area south of Saigon. |
0640 (H) | Arrived in area. Submerged, maintaining periscope watch with 12 feet of scope out. |
0941 (H) | Heard pinging and sighted a single mast bearing 120°T. (SHIP CONTACT #15). Unable to close and remain outside of 20 fathom curve. Believed this to be a single PC boat similar to ship contact #11. Felt certain that he was not escorting anything because we had been able to sight him a few days ago, only after his convoy had been in sight for some time. |
1904 (H) | Surfaced. Commenced searching area at standard speed on two engines. |
Oct. 23, 1944 | Searching area as before. |
0100 (H) | Commenced return to assigned patrol line having sighted nothing. |
Oct. 23, 1944 | Returning to patrol line. |
1200 (H) | Very close APR contact on 140mgs. Submerged. Nothing sighted by periscope. Because of low clouds, believe this one could have had radar contact on us without being seen. Remained submerged to reset Pit Log speed indicator and clean hydraulic plant strainers. |
