CONFIDENTIAL
Subject: U.S.S. BERGALL - Report of THIRD War Patrol
------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12 Feb. 1945
2200

Received (SAF) request position from BLOWER.

2246 Transmitted (SAF) position and ordered radio silence to BLOWER and GUITARRO.   Hoped it wasn't too late.   Headed for rendezvous.

13 Feb. 1945
0550 By visual told GUITARRO to take station 10 miles east of us.   To head north at 12 knots at 0800 and to keep her SD radar secured.

0620 On station.   Changed course to north.   Reversing every 20 minutes.

0655 Contacted BLOWER and gave her same message (by visual) as GUITARRO, changing east to west.

NOTE:- I realized that securing the SD radar was somewhat dangerous.   However it has not been in use on this boat since passing through the barrier and we have watched Jap planes pass around us, six or seven miles away.   Messages from boats on the scouting line south of us plus ComSubPac's message on Jap radar DF equipment added together indicated a very simple explanation for their failure ro reach a firing position.

Although no stars were available, I believed our longitude fairly accurate so used 10 mile scouting interval in hoes two boats could get in an attack.

0710 Submerged on course 000šT.

0808 Surfaced.   Headed north at 12 knots.

1117 Dove for plane coming from GUITARRO's direction.   Believe all three of us were forced down by this one.   (Aircraft Contact #17).   He didn't drop so we hoped we hadn't been seen.

1150 Sighted plane again.   Guess we'll have to stay submerged now.   Visibility about 10,000 yards.   Rain squalls here and there.   Sound reports high noise background.
